SPRING CLEAN YOUR BODY ON THE INSIDE… GO ADDITIVE FREE!

springcleaningp3-1

Yep, I’m milking this season for all it’s worth!  The usual thing is to spring clean your home, and in previous blogs, I’ve mentioned some ways you can do that without chemicals messing with your family’s health.  Ultimately though, The Food Werewolf is all about helping you with the strong link between food and allergies or sensitivities.  So to compliment your spring clean at home, how about a spring clean for your body!  How?  By going additive free of course!

In the spirit of all things fresh and clean with the glorious season of Spring, here are 6 additive free ways to spring clean your body.

1.  SMOOTHIES

Have a cleansing smoothie every morning instead of sugar laden cereals of heavy toast with additive laden spreads.  Try for a mixture of fruits and vegetables, throw in some healthy greens and spice it up with some cinnamon, nutmeg or ginger (fresh or dried).  With plenty of delicious fruits to choose from, you can take your pick or make a yummy combo with fruits such as pineapple, banana, papaya, pears and strawberries.  Be sure to go for organic whenever possible and add some zing with fresh ginger, cinnamon or nutmeg to calm and cleanse.  Fresh juices are best made in a good quality slow torque juicer, made fresh and consumed right away.  If you don’t have a good juicer, try just blending it all in a blender with some ice cubes so you keep all the fibre and whole fruit goodness.

2.  AVOID TAKEAWAY AND ADDITIVE FREE QUICK FIX OPTIONS

Try to ease off on the deep fried food and/or takeaway for a week or two.  On the nights when you feel too tired to cook, have some eggs cooked your favourite way instead.  Make that little extra effort and add some baby spinach, asparagus, mushrooms or tomatoes and feed your body with cleansing and energizing options instead.  The same goes when you’re searching for a quick easy lunch – opt for an additive free “grab and go” choice such as a mandarin, carrot, cheese or nuts.  Or try some yoghurt and sprinkle on some LSA, pepitas, sunflower seeds or chia seeds and give your body an energy boost to get you through the day.

3. HOMEMADE SWEET TREATS

Whip up a sweet treat at home to curb those cravings instead of reaching for lollies or chocolate.  Try something like these energy balls or Sarah Wilson’s I Quit Sugar fudge (click here for her super easy and yummy recipe).  If you’re not up for making something, you can’t go past the Loving Earth Caramel made with cashews, coconut sugar and cocao butter – it’s so much better than caramel! (warning – it’s also addictive, and since this is a spring cleanse of your body, eat in moderation!)

4.  SAY GOODBYE TO HEAVY HOT MEALS

Make the change to lighter meals with salads and stir fries replacing the winter stews and heavy carbs.  If you’re still having some chilly nights in your parts, go for soups laden with veges and fresh herbs to warm your insides and still spring clean your system.

5.  REPLACE THE HOT CHOCOLATE WITH WATER OR HERBAL TEA

Drink water, water and some more water.  And if you really want some flavour, add some slices of citrus or chill some herbal tea to make a healthy caffeine free iced tea.  My beloved husband managed to curb his softdrink loving ways and drink more water by converting to soda water or mineral water.  The best way to do that on the cheap is to invest in a sodastream.

6.  EXERCISE AND RELAXATION

Spring cleaning your body with additive free foods is always nicely complimented with a little exercise, so get out in the glorious sunshine and breath the fresh clean air whilst you do your favourite outdoors activity.  Perhaps it’s gardening, going for a bike ride or taking the dogs for a walk.  If you’re after something less strenuous, why not take a little time out in your day for the week and spring clean your mind and soul with a little light yoga or meditation with your bare feet in the grass.

With six simple changes to your winter routine you can spring clean your body and start the season feeling happy and healthy from the inside out!
